Editorial policy

How this material is written, sourced and corrected.

Sourcing

Pages describe process at a general level and cite primary sources — statutes, agencies, official portals — rather than secondary commentary. Where a rule varies between jurisdictions the text says so instead of presenting one state's rule as a national one.

Corrections

Errors are corrected on the page where they appear. Where a correction changes the substance of what was said, the change is noted rather than made quietly.

A correction is most useful when it names the page, quotes the sentence, and cites a source that contradicts it. The contact page sets out the rest.

Independence

The Records Desk takes no position on the political questions these processes decide. The subject is the machinery, not what it ought to produce. No advertising, no sponsored placement.
